About the speakers:
Akkai Padmashali:
Is an
internationally recognised activist, motivational speaker, and
singer. For her work in activism, she has received the Rajyotsava
Prashasti, the second highest civilian honour of the state of
Karnataka, and an honorary doctorate from the Indian Virtual
University for Peace and Education.
Uma:
Is a human rights activist and Kannada
poet, with nearly 22 years of experience with grassroots activism.
She is the Founder/Executive Trustee of JEEVA-Trust, an NGO that
focuses on addressing issues around mental health, livelihood
and community media for sexual and gender minorities in Karnataka
Utkarsh Saxena:
Is a lawyer and economist who, together
with his partner, submitted a petition for marriage equality to the
Supreme Court of India. He is a PhD candidate in public policy at the
University of Oxford, supported by the Clarendon scholarship at St.
John’s college.
Jayna Kothari:
Jayna is a co-founder of CLPR (Centre
for Law and Policy Research). She is a Senior Advocate and practices
in the Supreme Court of India. She represented Akkai and Uma in the
Marriage Equality hearings.
Arvind Narrain:
Arvind Narrain is an advocate and
founder member of the Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore. Author of
several books, his latest publication is India’s undeclared
emergency: constitutionalism and the politics of resistance (2022).
